Properties of Grinding Tungsten Carbide

Because of its exceptional properties, tungsten carbide in recent years emerged as an alternative to steel for many industrial applications. It is a ceramic material composed of approximately a 1:1 ratio of tungsten and carbon atoms.

Properties of grinding tungsten carbide

  • Strength – Grinding tungsten carbide has very high strength. It is hard and rigid.
  • Rigidity – Tungsten carbide’s Composition ranges from two to three times as rigid as steel and four to six times as rigid as cast iron and brass.
  • Heat Resistance – Tungsten carbide have high resistance to deformation and deflection.
  • Impact Resistant – For such a hard material with such a high rigidity, the resistance is high.
  • Low temperature resistance- Grinding tungsten carbide retains toughness and impact strength in the cryogenic temperature ranges.
  • Thermal Conductivity – Tungsten carbide is in the range of twice that of tool and carbon steel.
  • Electrical Conductivity – Grinding Tungsten carbide is in the same range as tool and carbon steel.
  • Weight – The weight of tungsten carbide is from 1-1/2 to 2 times that of carbon steel.
  • Hot Hardness – When temperature is increased tungsten carbide retains much of its hardness.
  • Methods of Fastening – Tungsten carbide can be fastened by brazing, epoxy cementing, or mechanical means.
  • Coefficient of Friction – Tungsten carbide compositions have low dry coefficient of friction values as compared to steels.
  • Wear-Resistance – Tungsten carbide wears up to 100 times more than steel in conditions including abrasion, erosion and galling.
  • Dimensional Stability – Tungsten carbide undergoes no phase changes during heating and cooling and retains its stability easily.

Thanks to its wear resistance and hardness tungsten carbide is always the best suite for wear parts and other machine parts which help in severe service conditions such as high temperatures, corrosion and abrasion. The main component of tungsten carbide is its high strength and low ductility at high temperatures.

Benefits of grinding tungsten carbide:

  • Smaller parts inventories
  • Less downtime to replace worn components
  • Greater productivity
